At the end of Out of Africa, as Meryl Streep, a.k.a. Karen Blixen, is invited to join the all-men's drinking salon, she lifts her glass to them and toasts "to Lightfoot Lad . . . " The allusion is perfect: her "Lightfoot Lad (Robert Redford a.k.a. Denys Finch Hatton) is dead, no more brooks to leap, and she and the men she toasts will soon follow.
